Our Ash Wednesday liturgy invites us to take on a variety of Lenten practices, including the study of scripture, self-examination, and prayer (BCP 265).  In our 5-week Lenten program “Writing to God,” inspired by a book with the same name, we as a community will enter into these practices.

Each week, after sharing a meal together, we’ll hear, reflect on, and discuss brief passages of scripture on different themes.  At the end of each session, we’ll devote time to writing individual prayers to God, with the help of specific prompts.  Don’t worry about being a “good” writer; you won’t have to share your writing with anyone; all you need is a willingness to try.  Ideally, this practice will deepen our understanding and experience of prayer as we move toward the mystery of Easter.

R. Dale Smith, our seminary intern, will lead this program with the help of Katie Cosby.  No book, reading, or other pre-preparation is needed, though we do suggest that you bring a notebook in which to write your prayers.  No need to bring any food, either: All you have to do is show up!
