 PROGRAMS, EVENTS, AND INFORMATION

This Week

Hello St. Thomas'

I'm Lara who brings you the weekly E-Communique as well as other things throughout the week at the church. This is my last week at St. Thomas, and I want to say thank you to all of you for making me feel so welcome. From staff, to parishioners, to visitors and everyone in between you all make St Thomas' a warm and welcoming place. I have been blessed to have worked here. I am excited for next steps in my life to come, but I am sad to be leaving you all. Feel free to stop by the Office to say hello and goodbye to me as well as hello to our 2 great new Office Co-workers, Carol and Mary. All three of us will be here Monday and Tuesday of next week. Thank you for all your kindness, and I'm sure that I will see you again.

Coming Soon

Calling all male singers!   The anthem on September 5 will be a setting of Finlandia (Be Still, My Soul) for male voices, and we need males to lend their voices.  We'll rehearse promptly at 9 a.m. and sing at the final 10 a.m. service of the year that day.  Please be in touch with David McCormick (DMcCormick@stthomasrichmond,org) to say "yes" and what part you sing.

Contemplative Candlelight Worship on Wednesday nights at 5:30, beginning on September 8. You are invited to St. Thomas for contemplative worship designed to refresh your spirit. The service is focused on prayer and reflection with candles and incense in an intimate format. Explore your journey with us! Childcare is provided.

The St Thomas' Annual Oystoberfest will take place on Saturday, October 16 from 12 - 6 pm.The event will be held on St. Thomas' grounds and will feature food, beverages, bands, children's activities and of course, Oysters!  A variety of food and drinks, including Oysters (on the half shell, steamed, and fried), barbecue, ice cream, sodas and beer will be available for purchase.

Toiletry items for Food Pantry- As you go on vacation this summer and stay in a variety of hotel/motels pick up the small travel toiletry items offered to you. We are adding them to the food pantry bags and the recipients are VERY grateful. Every little bit helps.

CARITAS Sept 4-11 Ginter Park Churches Joint CARITAS @ Battery Park Christian Church (St. T's will host in December)

Things for CARITAS are coming together, but we still need some volunteers. Approximately 28 guests (families) will be staying at Battery Park Christian Church from Saturday 9/4 until Saturday 9/11. Several Northside churches are working together to make this happen. We still need volunteers for the following:

1. Dinner on Monday 9/6.

Usually they arrive by 4:30 p.m. to set up tables, set tables up, prepare or heat up meals: Entree, Vegetable, Salad, Dessert, and Beverages: Milk,  Coffee, Tea, Juice (no sodas). They should be ready to SERVE dinner by no later than 6:00 p.m. (usually gather families with a prayer, then serve.) Then help families with children, high chairs, booster seats, etc... Also the Dinner Hosts clean up the dining area, tables, chairs, and clean up kitchen afterward. If there is extra food, let the next dinner people know for the next night.

***Several families can work together on this.

2. Breakfast on Thursday 9/9.

Be there, by 5:30 a.m., making coffee, bringing breakfast material to Battery Park to cook, set tables, serve by no later than 6:00 a.m. Families need to leave early, between 6:30 - 7:00 a.m. for their jobs, or other places, for the day. Breakfast crew should check the day before to see what is left from day previous, so they are not buying too many food supplies to prepare (i.e. check milk, bread, juice, eggs, cereals, etc.) They should prepare for up to 30 people. (People like bacon, hint-hint-hint...). I have had several people volunteer to supply cereal and juice for this day, so basically we need folks to set up and serve and maybe supply a couple of food items.

3. Set up cots on Saturday 9/4- 9am. We need 4-8 volunteers.

4.Drop off any supplies at Battery Park Christian Church between 9:30 and 11 onSaturday 9/4.

5. DRIVERS are needed to take people to showers at the North Richmond YMCA any night that they sign up with CARITAS SITE MANAGER/CHURCH SITE MANAGER for showers. You must have drivers ready by 7:30 - 8:00 p.m. to put car seats in vehicles. EACH FAMILY MUST TRAVEL TOGETHER IN ONE CAR. So I'd get a lot of vehicles ready for that time. We must be done with showers by no later than 8:45 - 9:00 p.m. when North Richmond YMCA closes.

6. We need approximately 8 baby gates for stairwells.  If you have one or two to loan, we will return them.  Please label the gates and deliver to Battery Park Christian Church Sat, Sept 4, between 9:30 and 11am.

Please contact Katie Best at kwbest@hotmail.com if you would like to volunteer. Thank you!!
