Opportunities to Give
"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." -- Dr. Seuss
Do you remember your first day of school? Help kids focus on learning, not worrying about having shoes to wear or supplies for the classroom... Volunteer for the YMCA Bright Beginnings program. It's free, easy and fun! Shop with a child on Wednesday, August 25th from 5:30 - 9:30 pm at a local Target. Volunteer forms will be available in the Parrish Hall on Sunday. Can't be there? Would still like to help? Monetary donations accepted, just write a check to St. Thomas' and put "Bright Beginnings" in the memo. Contact Stacy Hull (stacy@parkerhouseinteriors.com) or Anne Chamberlain (annerc@comcast.net) for more infor
This August, members of the St. Thomas Youth Group will be embarking on a mission trip to the heart of Appalachia, working directly with a family affected by poverty, volunteering their time with home repairs and helping them out however they can. We'll be working with the Appalachia Service Project for this trip.
Appalachia Service Project (ASP) provides one of the most rewarding structured service opportunities in the nation -- bringing thousands of volunteers from around the country to rural Central Appalachia to repair homes for low-income families. But ASP is more than just a building program. Because when you change the lives of others, they have a way of changing you.
But we still need some financial support to make this trip a reality. Transportation and program costs add up, and the youth would certainly welcome any assistance that anyone could offer, no matter how big or small. Donations are being accepted at St. Thomas' by the youth following the service each Sunday through July 25th, or can be dropped off at the front office. And for your convenience, you can even make online donations using a credit card through http://www.stthomasyouth.myevent.com/ !
Thank you for helping us make this important journey a reality!
Construction materials needed for youth mission trip to Appalachia! Do you work in construction? Are you a Jack or Jill of all trades? Do you have basic construction tools/supplies you would be willing to share with the Appalachia mission trip team? (They would be returned to you after the trip.) We are in need of: plastic 5 gallon buckets (empty), brooms, circular saw, extra saw blades, sharpened hand saw, levels, squares, chalk line, staple guns/staples, tin snips, drill/extra bits (cement/wood/metal), utility knives/blades, saw horses, ladders. Please contact Carolina if you can help with any of these.

Bright Beginnings and North Richmond YMCA of Greater Richmond
Just wanted to remind people that it is not too late to participate in BRIGHT BEGINNINGS.
YMCA Bright Beginnings helps children from low-income families arrive on their first day of school with new clothes and shoes, a new backpack filled with supplies, and a readiness to learn. With your help, YMCA Bright Beginnings will serve over 2,400 children this year throughout the Greater Richmond areas. Over 25,000 children have been able to benefit from a YMCA Bright Beginnings experience since the program began in 1992.
There are 3 ways St. Thomas Episcopal Members can help the North Richmond YMCA of Greater Richmond partner with their Bright Beginnings Program:
1. Donate Money by writing a check to St. Thomas Episcopal with BRIGHT BEGINNINGS in the memo section. You can donate from $10 - $150 dollars and do it by August 8, 2010. The money goes to supplies, backpacks, and Target shopping trips with children to help them look for clothes.
2. Fill a Backpack and request a list of school supplies and donate that to the North Richmond YMCA!
3. Volunteer to meet at TARGET on Libbie and Broad, on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 5:30 p.m., to meet one of the 30 children to shop with a child and help them pick out school clothes, shoes, outer- and under-garments and socks. Men especially needed to help out the young boys, ages 6 - 12.
